Medjugorje is a village in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At an altitude of 200 metres above sea level, the name Međugorje literally means “between mountains”. The Marian shrine of Medjugorje has become a popular pilgrimage site and is now recognised as Europe's third most visited apparition site.

Marian apparitions

Since 1981, Medjugorje has become a popular site of international pilgrimage due to Our Lady of Medjugorje – a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children. These apparitions continue today, with reported messages of peace, prayer and faith.

International pilgrimage 

Around 3 million pilgrims from more than 80 countries visit the Marian Shrine in Medjugorje every year. Over 30 million people of all faiths have visited Medjugorje and have left spiritually strengthened and renewed.

By plane 

The nearest airports to Medjugorje are in Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia, and Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. All three cities offer bus and taxi services to Medjugorje.

How to get to Medjugorje

By car or bus

Car rentals are available from nearby cities, including Sarajevo, Mostar, Split and Dubrovnik. If you're traveling from Croatia, renting a car will give you much more flexibility. You can also easily travel to Medjugorje by bus from Mostar.

Travel tips

Peak pilgrimage times include the summer months, coinciding with the Medjugorje International Youth Festival in August. Hotels, hostels and private homes all offer accommodation for pilgrims.

Prayer areas in Medjugorje

There are three main areas where pilgrims gather in Medjugorje:

Apparition Hill

Our Lady's first apparitions in Medjugorje took place several hundred meters above the village of Bijakovići in a place called Podbrdo. In English, we refer to it as Apparition Hill. A steep path leads from the houses of Bijakovići to the very place of the apparitions.

Križevac

Križevac – or “Cross Mountain” – is the hill above Medjugorje. In 1934, the people of Medjugorje erected an 8.5-metre concrete cross to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of Jesus' death. Pilgrims to Medjugorje climb the mountain, praying the Stations of the Cross along the way.

St. James Church

The Saint James Church is a parish church in Medjugorje, consecrated in 1969 and recognised as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The church is under the patronage of James the Great and is run by the Franciscan order of Bosnia.
